Mental Health is a state of wellbeing in which an individual can cope with the normal stresses in life, can work productively and fruitfully with others & is able to make a positive contribution to society. 
It is important to understand the overlapping nature of mental disorders & an individual’s symptoms & how these impact their daily functioning and quality of life. 
Understanding the interaction between a parents symptoms of mental disorder and the impact on their parenting capacity which could give rise to safeguarding concerns, is very important to be able to support parents with mental disorder and respond effectively.

Learning Outcomes of the session 
• Recognise the overlapping nature of mental disorders; the importance of understanding an individual’s symptoms and how these impact their daily functioning and quality of life
• Demonstrate the interaction between a parents symptoms of mental disorder / substance misuse and the impact on their parenting capacity which gives rise to safeguarding concerns
• Improve awareness of local services available to support parents with mental disorder and respond effectively
